Round 2 of the MAM Christmas Classic (Mt. Pisgah vs. Kingsbury)
This was an exciting game! It was probably the best game and match up of the MAM Christmas tournament thus far.
Kingsbury featured a top guard from the class of 2016, DeMonte Person, and an extremely athletic “Big” Daryl Sheilds. I had not seen Sheilds play before, but his size alone is intimidating. Mt. Pisgah has a very athletic kid as well in London Gool, at 5’11” that can literally jump out of the gym. Plus Pisgah has a sharp shooter, with showtime handles in Nate Vaughn. Somehow you knew going in, that there would be some fireworks in this game. Mt. Pisgah was trying to “right the ship” after coming off of some sloppy games during the regular season, and Kingsbury was trying to build a name for its program as an “elite team”.
Vaughn got going early with two quick 3s in the first minutes of the game. He finished the first quarter with 11 points. Vaughn was not the only one draining 3s, Person had the answer, as he dropped some 3s for Kingsbury. It was a battle from the very beginning, the half ended with a score 23-23 tied.
During the second half, Kingsbury made some adjustments that did not go in their favor, they moved Pearson off the ball–I suppose it was to put him in more of a scoring position, but from my perspective he was scoring just fine in the first half. Mt. Pisgah was able to capitalize on this, as they forced Kingsbury’s other guards to turn the ball over several times. Gool made some big buckets late in the game to seal the the victory for Mt. Pisgah.
Nate Vaughn – This was a breakout game for Nate. He scored well and made some key steals.
Key to victory: Mt. Pisgah role and bench players shot the ball and protected the ball better than Kingsbury players.
